Guild Wars or World of Warcraft? I think I would get the best answers from those who have played both. I've only played WoW at a friends house but never GW. I looked at the videos between the two on youtube and both have things I like. I like the profession dances on GW more than WoW yet I like more the cartoon feel of WoW. Then there's the fact GW is free once you buy it while WoW requires a monthly fee or so. But my friend plays WoW and he would like me to join so we can play together.

There are other things though I would like to know about GW. I read that the skill sets is sort of like magic the gathering. Compared to WoW's system would you say WoW is more like yugioh?

I was looking at the keyboard controls for GW, I don't like the idea using the letters to move my character nor using the mouse. Is it possible to switch the basic controls of forward, back, left, right to the arrow keys?

Well, I've played both, GW for just over a year now, and WoW for a few weeks before it got horribly boring, which was before I started GW.

Personally, I like GW more and would refer a friend to it before WoW, simply because the I like the playstyle, the graphics, etc.

I don't get the whole Magic vs Yu-Gi-Oh thing. o_O In GW you have 8 skills you can use at a time, but out of a list of hundreds and hundreds, you can also use 1 elite skill within them. 1 elite, 7 regular.

You can change controls in game in the options. For example, instead of using 1-8 for my skills, for awhile I was using 1-4 and q-r.

Thank you. Now on to my next questions.

1. Do you have to have a seconday profession?

2.While there are many combinations for a primary and secondary combination which ones seem to go best with each other? Name whether their good for pve or pvp.

3. Do you choose a server just like WoW and does it show whether the population is low, medium, or high? I prefer a low or medium server.

You can use wasd or the up, left, down, right keys for movement, I personally use the arrow keys.

You need a secondary to progress through the story line.

There is no 'best', each profession has its ups and downs.

Theres no server choosing. In towns theres districts. Theres more populated districts and less populated districts.

Ah. So with no server, does GW have any lag problems?

So is a Necromancer/Mesmer ok?

Ive played both and they are very hard to compare because of so many differences. The fact that PvP is much different. The fact that gw's is closed instances and WoW is open. Here is my suggestion. Since guild wars is a buy once and have it for ever with no monthly. Buy them both and play them then if you like WoW more your gw's account will still be there forever or if you like gw's you are only out the 50 bucks and 1 monthly fee.(15 bucks i think it was a month)

If you are tight on money I suggest WoW cause you will have a friend to help you start out and show you the way. Plus you can talk about it with each other during school(if you still go) and on the phone or over a voice communication program. Untill you make friends on gw's WoW would be a better experience due to you bieng able to joke and get help from your friend.

However guild wars has a usually helpful community and you will always be able to find someone to help you in a guild/alliance or on guru or just random people in local chat. Don't get me wrong there is always the ignorant guy who is like you newb go learn yourself.

I don't remember much about WoW as i played it like 2-3 years ago. But I don't think you can get AI to help you on quests and such when you are stuck. AND in the chances that you need help and someone isn't there to help you or you just like playing by yourself. You can have 3 heroesat a time that you control there is actually a ton of heroes) that you can customize there stats armor and skills to your liking. There is also henchmen wich are pretty crappy but still will provide team support.

Read my revised post ^_^

If you go to less populated districts or foreign districts which generally have less people you shouldnt have lag, It really depends on your connection. I usually run a whole ton of crap in the background and still have no problems.

N/Me its a pretty good profession split and like all other professions has its strengths and weaknesses.

Towns are closed so unless the town is extremly packed like during a event(xmas/haloween/canthan new year/is there anymore i forget ^^) then you won't have lag in them. You usually won't lag unless you are running a junky connection speed. I don't have lag problems unless I am downloading music or something. I also run a cable internet connection

Edit: In PvE they make you choose a 2ndary to go forward in the storyline. A PvP only char doesn't have to have one.

All primaries/2ndaries have weaknesses. Example: A monk has 3 common 2ndaries in pvp. monk/mesmer monk/warrior monk/elementalist. The mo/me can bring a skill called hex breaker wich makes the next hex cast on you fail. The mo/me can also bring channeling(gives u +1 energy for each nearby foe whenever you cast) to help him manage energy. So it stops things that can slow down your casting speed and what not. The mo/wa can bring a stance that allows you to avoid melee attacks giving you better survival rate vs warriors and assassins and dervishes however you are more suseptible to hexes. And finally the mo/e can bring a skill called glyph of lesser energy(causes next 2 spells to cost xx less energy) to help him manage his energy easier.

Edit: If you do choose to buy guild wars and you make a monk. Flare(an ele spell) is not a good skill to put on your bar as a monk(not even as an ele). I just wana give you that bit of info so you are 1 step ahead of the rest of new players.

Edit: Here is all about the guild wars professions http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Professions

If you go to that sites homepage you can look at different skills armor the heroes i was talking about. It explains PvE and PvP in depth and what not. Anything you can think of and more.

I should give you this aswell. It wil give you an idea of the bars that different professions run.

http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

Hope it helps.

This may sound like a odd question, I understand some professions allow you to summon an ally. Out of the things that you can summon, is there anything as hot as the succubus from WoW? Also can I have a mount?

I've played both games quite a bit, and personally I prefer GW.

WoW is a great game, I'll be the first to admit. However, while the world is huge and there's a lot to do, I disliked the fact that the game is fairly one-dimensional. There are no ulterior goals to the game; everything is centered around character advancement, combat, and treasure.

GW, on the other hand, offers a lot more options for in-game goals. While the game is still very combat- and treasure-oriented, it's also very accomplishment-oriented, with the title system offering an incentive to work toward completing difficult areas of the game or other tasks.

WoW is very, very grindish. You'll find yourself fighting monsters over and over, or doing the same dungeons and similar quests over and over, to get to the highest level and get the gear you want (many of the best pieces of gear for each level are only found from specific enemies/bosses and can't be bought or sold). The game offers a lot of positives, like a very immersive background, fun and cartoonish graphics, and a huge amount of explorable territory.

GW is very different. You will get to the max level simply by playing through the storyline of any of the campaigns, and it's not only possible but fairly easy for an experienced player to do this in a day. Once you've done this, you have a lot of options for what you want to do in the game - You can grind to achieve titles or farm areas for gold, you can try to beat harder areas in the game (some of which pose a fair challenge even to expert players), you can try to perfect your character by hunting down all the skills he or she doesn't have yet, etc. Positives of GW include excellent and realistic graphics, a fair number of options for replayability, and a number of different and well-designed PvP types.

As far as game mechanics - In WoW, you have access to each of your class's skills at a certain level and once you buy them you can always use them. This allows you to always have access to all of your skills. You gain points that you can invest into one of three "skill trees" for each class, which makes certain of your skills more powerful. The downside of this is that everyone who plays a given class will be playing one of three variations of that class.
In GW, you can obtain various skills for your class through quests, capturing them from bosses, or buying them from trainers. You can carry up to 8 skills at a time, including a single "Elite" skill. You have points that you can invest in attributes from both your primary and secondary profession. Both your attribute points and your skills are changeable any time you're in a town, and once you gain access to them, you can change your secondary profession at will too. This means that a player of a given class may not have certain skills from that class when you want them, but also allows for an enormous amount of build customization within any class.
And yes, you can set the controls however you'd like in both games.

(As far as the Magic/Yu-gi-oh thing, I've played both and I don't really see a good way to relate them to the two RPGs.)

No you can't have a mount. Instead you can map travel(by a few mouse clicks) from town to town then go into an area where you fight monsters.

The Necromancer can summon undead allies. Using Animate Bone Minions/Animate Shambling Horror/Animate Bone Fiend/Animate Flesh Golem/Animate Vampiric Horror/Animate Bone Horror. O btw I don't know what the succubus is so I don't know if it is as hot as that. ^^ sorry

Edit: btw magic>yugiog lol i still have cards from both rotting away in a box somewhere.

Unless you're into Flame Djinns or Ghosts, not really. And no, you can't have a mount, but since you can teleport to and between towns, it's not really something you need.

No mounts, since we can fast travel between outposts and continents. In WoW, you need to travel long distances and traverse the world just to get to places. In GW, you click on an outpost you've already been to, you're there.

The things you can summon are bone minions, flesh golems and spirits. Nothing as imaginative as the succubus, voidwalker or Felguard.

I personally don't like the look of WoW. Others don't like the look of GW. At the end of the day, though, are you looking for a new game or do you want to hang out with your friend(s) online?

You could probably get a free access key and trial it for a few days. Start a thread asking for that, someone is bound to have one. I have already given mine away or I'd happily pass it over.

ok wow is good if u got the time and enjoy taking long walk across the world and like skills that take 30 mins to recharge, but yeah wow when u get to 70 all u do is spend hours and hours grinding for epics and i played x30 rates server and it still took atleast a month to fully deck out a char, really boring imo, only fun u get is when ur playing with friends from lvl 1-70 and when ur 70 its only fun when ur fully geared out . play it if u like to waste ur time

gw's on the other hand doesnt take ages to acquire items u want and doesnt take ages to level up, and u can log on for a quick pvp/farm . whereas in wow u cant do anything on ur own, you need ppl, no npcs to help and quests take 1 year to do

and yeh if u wanna play wow, play fun private servers, much more fun

wow 4 neva, guild wars 4 eva

Personally I like Gw much better than WOW but I have both and the only reason that I have both is because I can play WOW for free and if you would like to play WoW for free then click this link and you can have WoW for Free then Buy GW and you'll have both games for free with no monthly fees.

Wow is a good laugh with a friend with free time but i found once at level 70 there was nothing much for me to do.

Played GW for 19 months, best value for money ever imo.

i'd recommend you'd get guildwars (only for €25 atm) and give it ago for a week or 2 then give WoW ago to play with your friend for a month or use a trial account which lasts 10 days.
you'll get a flavor for both and GW will always be there.
I prefere GW though.
